The captain of the Belle-Isle, François Thurot, was killed and his body washed up on the beach. François was a very successful privateer, merchant navy captain and smuggler who operated over many years and inflicted a lot of damage on ships of all nations. Researching about him I found that he had married a girl from London who was aboard the brig with him during his last battle. I thought about writing their story but the date is a little too early for me - I prefer the 19th century to the 18th. The idea developed from there.
I have been a fan of Georgette Heyer ever since I read her books as a teenager. Through her and from my degree course I know a fair amount about Regency London but very little about Dublin at the same period. It was time for me to find out!
