This is the Saint Patrick's Day Ball in 1850 at Dublin Castle which closed the Irish Social Season. This is the only picture I have been able to find, although it is considerably later than the period covered by my book. It was extremely difficult to find out facts about the events of the season and certainly needs more research. A good reason for another trip to Dublin, one of my favourite cities. One fact I did discover was that the current Lord Lieutenant or Viceroy had to kiss all the debutants which may have proved a trial for some. The Viceroy at the time of Miss Ridgeway's Privateer was Charles Lennox, fourth Duke of Richmond. My heroine was originally called Lucy Richmond, a name with a family connection, so I had to change it at short notice. Drat!
