Write bestseller >Submit to agents > find a publisher> get published >fame and fortune
This costs you time, effort and luck but no money. Publisher decides the print run and marketing budget, but can drop you if sales are insufficient. It is harder to make any changes with this method. The publisher will expect YOU to take part and/or arrange marketing activity.
Self Publishing and Writers’ Cooperatives:
Either DIY or cooperate with other writers. Share tasks e.g. proofreading, preparing for publication, formatting, marketing etc. A relatively new development in publishing.
Usually produce both ebooks and hardcopy at the author’s choice.
You meet the costs of your book (i.e. cover, printing and paperback copies) plus contribute money to the pot for activities the cooperative agrees – usually marketing, website etc.
More likely to publish books by the authors involved in the cooperative but some may run competitions and offer membership to winners and runners-up.
A vanity publisher will charge you for publishing your book. They will undertake all the work for you at a price. Their costs are high for both production and marketing. If you want no hassle and only a few books, there are plenty of Vanity Publishers on the web, Author House and Austin Macauley amongst others.
